heart of the matter – a book review

If you follow me on Twitter, then you might have seen my Tweet about the new Emily Giffin book, heart of the matter. I started it a couple days back and literally couldn’t put it down. It was great. One of the main things I look for in any novel is the strength of the characters. Do they come alive? Can I relate to their emotions? Even if I haven’t been in their situation, have their feelings been written in such a way that I feel as though I understand? Do I fall in love with them? If I can answer yes to two or more of these questions, then I know the book is good. All four – I know it’s going to be a winner. heart of the matter was a 4 question yes.

Basic plot summary? Tessa is married to Nick, a pediatric surgeon. They have been married for the past seven years and she has recently quit her job. Valerie is a single mother of a little boy Charlie. The two families have never met, until a tragic accident intertwines their lives and changes them all forever. I would give you more detail, but I want you to go into the book pretty unaware. I don’t want to ruin anything.

I will give you a little heads up. If you’re looking for a lighthearted something borrowed or something blue (Giffin’s first two books – both great beach reads) look the other direction. This one is a bit more serious and reminds me a lot of her most recent book, love the one you’re with.
