life without a smart phone

in Oh Hey, Random Ponderings, The Randoms

Every morning I have the same routine.

Wake up – roll over and grab my phone to turn of the incessant beeping – check my personal email, my work email, Twitter, Facebook and the weather. Then I hop out of bed do the bathroom shindig and grab a bowl of cereal while going over my schedule for the day and all of the things I need to do (all in my phone).

Throughout the day I constantly find myself tweeting funny things my friends say, checking the news and generally staying pretty connected via that small piece of plastic and metal.

I have not had a smart phone in 4 days. For 2 of those days I had no phone. I expected to feel the sense of freedom everyone says you get when you turn of your phone. You know? That ahhh moment when you realize you have no responsibility because you can’t respond to anyone. Did I feel free? Light? Happy?

Negative.

Instead I felt (feel) very annoyed. I liked my weather, I love my portable Twitter and I hate going into work with no idea of what is going on in my inbox. Instead of feeling liberated, I now feel behind. I haven’t had time to ponder responses to emails, plan my day according to the surprises messages and I have NO idea where I am supposed to be. (Well that’s a lie I have my schedule memorized and I can always look on Google Calendar, but you get the drift). For me, life without a smartphone has not made my life more relaxing. Instead it has made it more stressful and I really don’t like it.

Come soon replacement phone. I miss you.
