Facebook has become a global phenomena. You can go on any website and like an article or post, websites are now being customized to your “personal settings” based on the information you share with them and it’s now easier than ever to get your life stolen via the internet. Here are some simple tips to make sure that you are safe on Facebook.
1. Do not use the year of your birth on your profile – besides do you really want your friends to know how old you’re getting?
2. Don’t share your personal information with other websites – this can be turned off by following these steps: Account -> Privacy Settings ->Applications and Websites (at the bottom).
Set game and application setting to “only me” Info accessible through your friends – None of the boxes should be checked. Instant personalization should be turned off. Having public search turned off is the safest as well.
3. Turn off your Facebook Places. Everyone has recently been opted into Facebook Places. This little application could let the world know where you are, whether you want it to or not. To turn it off follow these steps. Account -> Privacy -> Customize Settings
Places I check into should be set to only me. Uncheck the box next to include me in “people here now” Then scroll down and disable Friends can check me into places.
These three things will keep you pretty safe on Facebook, but I would recommend going through your privacy settings and making sure they are at a level you are comfortable with. Take the time to preview your profile and see how it looks in a public search. Log out and try to find yourself on Facebook. Do you share too much information? Keep yourself safe and know what you’re sharing with the public.
Have a great weekend everyone!
