changes in latitudes…

With the passing of time there is change. People grow older, wiser, more wrinkly. You make new friends, get married, have children and of course – change careers.

That’s where I am. At the career changing phase. After I graduated college I was lucky to work for two amazing companies. With the first I was able to spend the summer traveling the country running junior golf tournaments with 5 other people that I love more than life itself. We started the summer as strangers and I will be friends with many of them for life.

After I left the internship, I was hired by a public relations and social media marketing firm here in Ga. This company produces social media marketing campaigns that cannot be topped. While working with this organization I learned a great deal about social media marketing, public relations, search engine optimization, everything. I learned most of what I know about socail media marketing from them.

But I always missed my roots, I missed planning events, I even missed running junior golf tournaments (something I never thought would happen). Way back when, when I was still in college (1 year ago this past week) I was planning events and running recruitment each year. I love the whole process, I love seeing events come together, I love working with people and I really missed it.

I stumbled across an opportunity to work with an amazing public relations / event planning company here in Atlanta and sent in my resume. Read the rest of this entry »

she has a face only a mother could love

Have you ever noticed that so many people walk through life completely obvlivious to their own faults? They are unable to accept that there might be a better, newer, more effective way to do something. I find those people often justify their actions with “well, this is how things have always been done.” I really find nothing more annoying. If we kept doing things the way they had always been done, we would be riding horses, sending snail mail and reading our evening papers by candle light rather than checking out the news via Twitter on a smart phone.

For the most part we are all resistant to change, to critique, to any sort of perceived criticism. Why is that? Why is it that the idea that there might be a better way is often perceived as an insult to the way things are being done now? Change is happening all around us, everywhere you look there are small subtle changes everyday. It seems to me that the way things are currently being done might have been perfect for the time when the idea was concepted. But with the passing of time, it’s time to move forward to grow.

While this is a common element of corporate America, I often find myself seeing similar examples amongst the young, emerging public relations professionals. Today I was talking with @HuddyBud at work. Read the rest of this entry »

So You Work in Social Media? … What is that Exactly? Facebook?

For those of you in social media, I’m sure you’ve had that conversation about 1000 times. It goes something like this…

Stupid Person A: So what do you do?
Me: I work in public relations and social media marketing.
Person A: So what does that mean exactly? You Facebook?
Me: Yes, while you do really important things like excel spreadsheets, I sit around and play on Facebook all day. Social media marketing at it’s finest. Well not exactly…. long pause …. yes, I do Facebook.
